The constant craving

Egocentrism – the constant craving.

Released by K.D. Lang in 1992, constant craving was one of those songs of the 90’s decade that stood out for more than just its catchy melody and accordion. Its thoughtful and meaningful lyrics had a message for the world.

The song repeats a message of an age old affliction with which humans seem unaware of; the constant, unrelenting and repetitive craving for more. At what point does one have enough? Enough money, enough things. At what point does one stop and say, I’m happy now with what I have I don’t need any more. My car is fast enough, my house is big enough, I have enough money to live comfortably.

The song begins with:

“Even through the darkest phase, be it thick or thin. Always someone marches brave,
here beneath my skin”.

These lyrics presents the amazing power of the spirit to get us through dark and difficult times. The grit and determination we can call on in some of our most difficult times, struggles and challenges. The spirit has got many of us through some completely overwhelming situations or experiences. Life is no more than the present, everything happens in the present, our minds extend this present into the past and future, which is where the worry and rumination starts.

“Maybe a great magnet pulls all souls towards truth”.

This presents the ongoing pull of mankind towards the spiritual self, away from the seeking of titles, hierarchy, power, greed, addiction, hate and envy. It presents the idea that our lives are not just random and unconnected events, without meaning or direction, but our lives are guided by a hidden hand, looking out for us with the best and highest level of intentions. A hand that will guide us on each of our own spiritual paths, if we allow it.

“Constant craving has always been”.

The chorus of the song focusses on the human condition and its constant craving for worldly things, never having enough of anything, be it money, things and possessions and the fact that it has been this way for millennia.

The song stops short of any suggestions of a solution to our human problems, leaving any aspiring listener to reflect on this aeon long challenge for mankind. What do you think is the way out of the constant craving? Getting to that place where one is content and at peace with the world.
