Na-na-na-na-na, na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na

A hit 90’s dance song sung by Italian singer/songwriter Gala Rizzatto in Europe in 1996 and the UK in 1997. It’s such a catchy song, it would be easy to miss the meaning and thought put into the lyrics.

The first chorus carries an important message for those seeking enlightenment. It certainly has Buddhist overtones.

“Freed from desire, mind and senses purified”

An amazing achievement for a human, to be free of their desire, to have a clear mind and not have to live their earthly time driven solely by their ego and their five senses; taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing.

“My love has got no power, he’s got his strong beliefs.”
“My love has got no fame, he’s got his strong beliefs.”
“My love has got no money, he’s got his strong beliefs.”

The verses explain about the nourishment of the ego, e.g money, power, fame and that there are some who live without being driven by such things. Many would be happy with having lots of money, things, achievements etc but to have little and be happy, that is true happiness.

Happiness isn’t out there, it’s within ones being. No amount of money can add anything to oneself. These things are external to us. Imagine a world where we are all happy, where there is no need to steel from others because we have achieved contentment and happiness. Nirvana is a phrase to describe this state of enlightenment, where one has stripped away the wants and cultivated a life with good intentions, deeds and thoughts.

“Want more and more, people just want more and more.”

The song’s bridges point out the ego’s relentless – constant craving – need for wanting more and more, more money, more things, more clothes, more jewellery, more holidays, more of the high life. We humans rarely get to the point where we say, we have enough of those things now. I have enough clothes, enough jewellery, enough food.

Given this is “just” a pop song, they’ve managed to write some meaningful and perhaps life-changing lyrics for those with eyes to see and ears to hear.
