Row, row, row, your boat.
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily.
Life is but a dream.
Row your boat, sung by children, parents and grandparents for generations. A very old nursery rhyme, probably at least 150 years old. It’s really simple and repetitive, probably to hit home the deeper message for those with the eyes to see and the ears to hear. For many it seems to be a cheery song about rowing a boat, but…..
What else could it possibly be about?
Does it have a deeper meaning?
What was the original intended meaning by the writer?
What is the boat it refers to?
What is this stream it refers to?
Why should be we so merry and joyous about it?
Why is life but a dream?
The rhyme is about you, your body, the vessel (boat). We are spiritual beings, each of us living in temporary vessels here on earth, experiencing life with our five senses, smell, touch, taste, sight and hearing.
The stream is our journey, our life, our own spiritual path.
Why should we be so joyous about it? Think of the laughing Buddha, why is he laughing? He is bald, overweight, simply dressed, not a penny in his pocket, yet he is belly laughing all the way. In other words, we can make our thoughts on life as easy or as difficult as we chose.
Why is life but a dream? This is a bigger question and it depends on your understanding of reality. This question will answer itself in time for those committed to a spiritual path.
