Myths and Legends

Myths might only be stories, but their appeal and ability to affect change in those reading or watching is timeless.

Raymond “Ray” Frederick Harryhausen was the one who brought the myths and legends to the masses in modern times with his stop motion animation. It was the wonderful 1963 film Jason and the Argonauts that as a child, piqued my instant interest in the meanings behind such stories. Jason and the Argonauts included characters such as Jason, Zeus, Hera, Triton, the Hydra and my personal favourite Talos, the huge bronze statue which comes to life to protect Crete.

Myths might only be stories, but their appeal and ability to affect change in those reading or watching is timeless. Be it ancient Egyptian, Greek or any other myth and legend, many have common messages for spiritual enlightenment. In modern times, myths are typically dismissed as just that, myth. It matters not whether myths and legends are actual real events, the message is just as important and beneficial for those with the eyes to see and ears to hear. Even in modern times, stories are a great way to teach morality and wisdom.

Some children’s stories, fables and rhymes with spiritual meaning.

The tortoise and the hare – slow and steady wins the race.
The lion and the mouse – small acts of kindness can have big rewards.
Cinderella – the humble receive the riches to the kingdom.
The farmer and the stork – be honest in your actions.
The honest woodcutter – a clear conscience is priceless.
The giving tree – true love is selfless.
The kind elephant – compassion wins hearts.
The kings puzzle – truth always triumphs.

As simple as children’s stories, fables and rhymes are, they provide food for thought in terms of what is offered spiritually in the greater stories of the myths and legends and how they can convey deeper meaning.

It’s certainly worth delving into some of these stories and myths and seeing the common and reoccurring themes within them.
