Knowing Me Knowing You

Knowing me (temet nosce) knowing you (God).

What better promotion for God than His own name Father aka “ABBA”.

The 70’s supergroup Abba comprised Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Anderson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Abba is an Aramaic word meaning Father spoken by both Jesus (God’s son and physical presence on earth) and Paul. Who else but God could have provided the guiding hand for those four earthly souls meeting, going on to marry and be one of the most famous groups in the world! What better way to spread the word of God than ABBA himself.

We can find three references to Abba (Father, I will obey you) within The New Testament in Mark 14:36, Galatians 4:6 and Romans 8:15. The term Father / Abba is a term for those who have a close connection to God and use the term Father, as a child would refer respectfully to their own Dad.

Mark 14:36 “And He [Jesus] said, ‘Abba Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.’”

Romans 8:15: “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father’.”

Galatians 4:6: “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba Father.’”

The reason for referring to God as Abba Father is typically in prayer. Using the word Father before prayer or talking to Him shows our deep respect and connection with God and that we get to know Him really well and learn to trust, but He also knows us, like a father knows his own child.

In the classic book by Alexandre Dumas (and later film) The Count of Monte Cristo, Abbe (abba) Faria the father of knowledge and wisdom passes on this knowledge and wisdom to Edmond Dantès in return for helping with their proposed escape from the Château d’If. Dantès eventually escapes the Chateau D’if prison and onto the Spada treasure. After losing everything, including his fiancé, his living and his newly acquired promotion by being wrongly imprisoned for unwittingly helping Napoleon, with the lessons and wisdom of the Abba / Father, Dantès escapes and goes on to find the hidden riches of the Kingdom.

The spiritual path for peace of mind by meditation, prayer and reflection, keeping the mind present takes skill, effort and determination. I find that mediation can be made easier (and more comfortable) by having a dedicated space in the home, a room, a corner or even an outdoor space. This beautiful Leewadee mediation set is a great addition for a room or space dedicated to mediation. If you would like to support this blog, as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
