Finding peace in a frantic world.
Top 10 questions on self discovery answered.
The following is a Top 10 list (based on internet search) of self discovery questions provided with my answers. We each have our own perspective, aims and experiences of life and will therefore reach one’s own conclusions to each of the following questions.
How can I find my life purpose?
Jobs and careers are different from life’s ultimate purpose. One’s ultimate life purpose is to experience God’s presence and know God. What greater achievement is there than knowing God and leading a Godly life? e.g a life full of love, peace, gratitude and kindness. Many believe our actions make little difference. In reality, the smallest act of kindness or even just listening (that is truly listening) to one another, can go a long way in the lives of others and the oneness we are all part of. Who am I beyond my thoughts and personality?
This question is the very crux and is at the very heart of spirituality. One’s thoughts are of the mind. Self is the essence of our spiritual being which is beyond our thoughts and personality. What happens to “you” when the mind is stilled?
Why am I here?
We are all fragments/perspectives of a greater consciousness. Life on Mother earth is a test for us all. We are here to know this and to find our higher spiritual self, to realise the oneness and not the separateness which the ego pushes onto us. See also blog 007 here.
How can I become more self aware?
The more thinking one does, the less one is present. Keeping the mind present is essential to enlightenment, keeping our mind from worrying about the so called future or so called past. Peace will not be found whilst chewing over or ruminating (getting stuck in an endless thinking loop about something). Once we realise we are far more than how we have been conditioned, programmed and led to understand the world, we can begin to see our true Self. Becoming self aware requires stillness and grace see blog 009 here.
What is the meaning of my life?
Life is a gift. The present is a gift. Meaning is something humans give to things and experiences. We can make of life and our experiences whatever we want, but humans having the gift of consciousness is an absolutely amazing opportunity to be part of and to be able to see the world as it is. Good thoughts and good deeds create deep meaning for ourselves and others. Gratitude is key.
How do I discover my authentic self?
One’s authentic self is always there. The authentic self has been pushed aside by the ego, years of schooling, teaching, culture and conditioning. To rediscover the authentic self one just needs to be present in mind. To let go of all of one’s past, let go of worries and fears about the future. When one finds peace, one also finds the authentic Self.
How can I connect with my inner self?
The true Self is not the same as the self (ego). Connecting with the true Self can take years of commitment, inner work, understanding etc to accomplish. For some, self realisation can happen in an instant. Finding the true Self in a sustainable way requires letting go of the lower habits and thoughts such as hate, jealousy, anger, shame etc and moving into habits and thoughts within the higher levels of consciousness such as unconditional love, peace, oneness, grace and enlightenment.
How do I discover my inner self?
By being present in mind. Less is more when it comes to discovering the inner self, the true Self. Humility and humbleness are a must.
What does it mean to know oneself spiritually?
Temet Nosce, know thyself. Knowing the essence of who we are. The present is where everything can be found and exists. Allowing the mind to drift into memories or project into imagined future takes us away from knowing ourselves spiritually.
How can I overcome my ego?
The ego is not something to be overcome, but to be let go of. It is not the enemy as such, but something to accept and move on from to better our lives. Acceptance is a good starting point, accepting the things that have happened or we have done. Acceptance of others and their shortcomings. Making a fresh start and moving into better behaviours and thoughts. Acting in the present instead of how we have been conditioned to act, our automatic responses to life and events. Unconditional love, helping others, being approachable, kind and living with grace is the aim to “overcoming” the ego. Humility and humbleness are a must. See blog 002 here.
